Efforts to curve child labour in the cotton industry of India
Five months after the publication of a report on child labour in hybrid cotton seed production by the India Committee of the Netherlands (ICN), revealing that almost 250,000 children under 14, mainly girls, work on hybrid cotton farms for long hours under hazardous conditions, a step stone meeting took place last September in Hyderabad, which gathered all seed multinationals (like Monsanto, Bayer, etc.) and their indian subsidiaries in a joint effort to face their responsibilities and commit to eliminate child labor from the cotton industry. The MV Foundation, an Indian organization dedicated to "the total eradication of child labor and the universalization of education", was mandated to cooperate with, facilitate and monitor industrials' actions on the field.
