Resolutie Huis van Afgevaardigden VS over Dalits
Op 23 juli 2007 werd in het Amerikaanse Huis van Afgevaardigden een resolutie met grote meerderheid aangenomen waarin de praktijken van ‘onaanraakbaarheid’ in India wordt veroordeeld. De regering wordt gevraagd samen met de Indiase regering, de Wereldbank, andere internationale organisaties en het Amerikaanse bedrijfsleven maatregelen te nemen tegen kastendiscriminatie en geweld tegen Dalits.
De presentatie van de resolutie door 14 leden van het Huis werd voorafgegaan door een hoorzitting van de Congressional Human Rights Caucus. Zij hoorden de getuigenissen van Kumar Swamy, Zuid-India directeur van de All Christian Council, T. Kumar, directeur beleidsbeïnvloeding Azië van Amnesty International, Nanci Ricks, president Dalit Freedom Network, Joseph D’Souza, internationale voorzitter van het Dalit Freedom Network en Smita Narula, uitvoerend directeur van het Center for Human Rights and Global Justice.

Resolution US House of Representatives on Dalits
On July 23, 2007 a historic resolution was passed in the US House of Representatives that denounces the practice of “untouchability” and declares that the United States should take steps to address the issue. Among its objectives, the resolution notes that the United States should work with the Indian government and the World Bank, as well as other international donor and aid agencies and American companies doing business in India, to fight discrimination and violence against Dalits.
The introduction of the resolution followed a briefing held by the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, which heard testimonies by Kumar Swamy, South India Director of the All Christian Council; T. Kumar, Advocacy Director for Asia & the Pacific, Amnesty International; Nanci Ricks, President of Dalit Freedom Network; Joseph D’Souza, International President of Dalit Freedom Network and Smita Narula, Executive Director of the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice at the New York University School of Law.
