Rotterdam, 5 mei. - Al gedurende enige tijd hebben ngo's (waaronder de Landelijke India Werkgroep, FNV, Amnesty International en Novib) de arbeidsomstandigheden in de hybride katoenteelt in India onder de aandacht gebracht van Unilever. Unilever kent deze problematiek en heeft hierover uitgebreid gecorrespondeerd, gesprekken gevoerd en heeft zich steeds bereid getoond tot dialoog. In dat licht verbaast Unilever zich dan ook over het feit dat van de zijde van de ngo's geen contact is gezocht met haar Indiase dochteronderneming Hindustan Lever Limited (HLL), ondanks Unilevers uitnodiging daartoe. HLL heeft een minderheidsbelang zonder managementcontrole in Paras Extra Growth Seed Ltd., het bedrijf dat katoenzaden afneemt van de tussenhandel die deze op zijn beurt koopt van de lokale boeren.

Van oudsher heeft HLL contractueel vastgelegd dat toeleveranciers geen gebruikmaken van kinderarbeid. HLL heeft zich er altijd van verzekerd dat haar leveranciers handelden in overeenstemming met de gemaakte afspraken door middel van regelmatige controles in de vorm van bezoeken, mondelinge navragen en bevestiging van naleving van deze eisen.

Kinderarbeid is in India verboden. Elke schending van de desbetreffende wetgeving kan gerapporteerd worden aan de State Administration, de verantwoordelijke lokale autoriteit. HLL heeft altijd de bereidheid getoond om eventuele schendingen van deze wetgeving, ook in samenwerking met ngo's, onder de aandacht te brengen van deze autoriteiten.

Unilever is fel tegenstander van kinderarbeid en onderschrijft de ILO Conventies op dit punt.

Rotterdam, 5 May. - Some time ago NGOs (including the India Committee of the Netherlands, the FNV trade union federation, Amnesty International and Novib) brought the working conditions in hybrid cottonseed production in India to Unilever's attention. Unilever is aware of this problem and entered into extensive correspondence about this and held talks and always showed its willingness to continue the dialogue. In view of that Unilever is surprised at the fact that the NGOs have not sought contact with its Indian subsidiary Hindustan Lever Limited (HLL), despite Unilever's invitations to do so. HLL has a minority stake without management control in Paras Extra Growth Seed Ltd., the business that purchases cottonseed from the seed organisers, who in turn buy it from the growers.

HLL has always laid down in its contracts that suppliers must not use child labour. It has made sure that its suppliers complied with these agreements by conducting regular checks, through visits by making inquiries and by requiring confirmation of compliance with the agreements.

Child labour is prohibited in India. Every violation of the relevant legislation can be reported to the State Administration, the responsible local authority. HLL has always been willing, also in cooperation with NGOs, to bring possible violations of this legislation to the notice of this authority.

Unilever is a strong opponent of child labour and subscribes to the ILO Conventions on this matter.
